The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935. This affectionate, loyal and smart breed is easy to train and produces a big bark. The Cardigan is said to have come from the same line of dogs as the dachshund. They have long tails, unlike the Pembroke who has no tail. They are the 78th most popular dog breed.
Exercise
The Cardigan adapts well to living on farms and in city apartments, but requires frequent exercise. They have a medium level of energy and should be taken on walks every day. Their long, low stature means their weight should be closely monitored so they don’t have added stress on their backs.
Health
Their long back and heavy front means they should be monitored closely during the first year so they do not jump off of furniture. The Cardigan is slightly larger and heavier than the Pembroke. The Cardigan’s feet are slightly bowed while the Pembroke’s feet are straight forward. This smart breed will live a happy, content life with its family but it not a dog to be left outside.
